President’s Message

I dream of ending the coming year as a vital, dynamic, energetic, hard-working Hollis Brookline Rotary Club with a membership of 50 great Rotarians.  Yes, that is a dream.

Is adding a net number of ten members in one year impossible?  Well, maybe, but as the sixth-grade teacher with whom I work tells her students, “You will always miss 100% of the shots you never take.”

I hope we will decide to take our best shot at adding 10 members to our rolls – members who are so much more than just warm bodies, but who are excellent Rotarians, fully committed to the ideals of Rotary, and eager to work with the rest of us to do more and better things for our communities and for the world.

President Dick Mills

It should be very clear by now that as we enter this next Rotary year, Hollis Brookline Rotary Club will need to draw heavily upon the energies of all its members – to draw upon your energy.  Rotary needs your enthusiasm.  Rotary needs your commitment.

So join me, won’t you please, as the new Rotary year begins, by renewing and re‑vitalizing your commitment to everything that is Rotary – to the Rotary ideal of “Service Above Self” – and especially to the continuing development and the growing success of our own Hollis Brookline Rotary Club.

I am honored, and humbled, to have been asked to assume the role of Club president for the coming year.  The job of a president in an organization of volunteers is a special one, and it is one that I have not previously experienced.  I shall certainly try my best to be – I think the word should be “useful.”

I will try to be a useful president, but I ask that each of us please remember: it is not the conductor of the orchestra who makes the music!  Without the committed involvement of an energetic and dedicated membership, a Rotary Club president can accomplish nothing.

But I am persuaded that, working all together, there is nothing we cannot do!

I ask you again for your support in the form of a renewal of your commitment to everything that Rotary represents, both as it exists within our local communities, and in the great world beyond.

I ask that you commit just a little more of your time and a little more of your energy to the good works of Rotary.

I ask that you consider digging just a little deeper into your pockets, to enable us to reach just a few more among that limitless hoard of people who are so desperately in need of our help.

And finally I ask that you join me and all of the great Family of Rotary in common resolve that we will, together, make the coming year a great Rotary year!

Dick Mills
