Highlights of the April Board of Directors Meeting Chapter finances are looking better and the upcoming Road Race should put us in good shape for the coming year’s commitments. We are only half way to the financial position we have set for ourselves but it appears we will achieve our goals. Attendance is picking up with 83% in March. We are still at 49 members, 48 active and one honorary. The subject of Rotary Shirts for new members was discussed and Dan Owens will look into sources of supply as well as design and pricing. Mike Dougherty requested, and was granted, a leave of absence until June 1st. A letter from the Hollis VFW, on behalf of the town of Hollis, was read. It invites the annual participation of Rotary in the Memorial Day parade as well as in helping decorate veteran’s monuments and the cemeteries the Saturday before Memorial Day. Donation requests were received from the Child Advocacy Center, Andy’s Summer Playhouse, a child in Brookline who has been supported in summer camp by our club in past years and the Care Givers. Calendar: April 26: Basil Harris is sponsoring Ken Grabeau for a talk on the Rotary Foundation. May 3: Richard Kalin will speak to us on Peak Oil. May 9: Board of Director meeting at the Hollis Library. May 10: Richard Loveland will make a presentation on Adobe Elements 4.0 before the two scheduled classes on the same subject. May 17: Club Assembly, conducted by Basil. May 24: We will have our exchange student, Carmen, and a 4-Way speech contestant, Allison Huberlie, who is representing our club at the District Conference in Vermont. May 31: Open slot, at this point. June 7: Richard Kalin will speak on the Hollis Community Farm project. June 8: Our Road Race Fund Raiser event. June 14: Sean Duffy will entertain us with a wine tasting treat. June 21: Final Club Assembly for your outbound president. June 29: Passing of the Gavel. Note that this is a change from the earlier planned June 23rd. District Events
May 19-21: District Conference, Stoweflake Resort On April 22, President Jim, President Elect Basil, Treasurer Dick and incoming treasurer Vince attended the District 7870 assembly. Each took part in several programs offered thru the day on items of interest to Rotary, leadership classes and training. A Group Study Exchange team from India was present to mingle with the attendees. Great entertainment is planned for the upcoming District Conference in Stowe Vt the weekend of May 20th. Reservations are still available for any club member wishing to attend. Our own "Passing of the Gavel" is coming up and everyone in the club should try to attend this annual event. It is the biggest social event we have as a club where we participate with our spouses. You should be hearing more about this event very soon from past President Frank. Speaking of Frank, he has agreed to take over the Program Coordinator spot from Ron for the next year. Each club member should consider it his/her responsibility to seek a guest speaker and coordinate the date with Frank. Basil has had a meeting with his incoming board of directors and is already planning ahead. He has some commitments he is required to make to the Rotary District during the month of May and is already in that process. We will devote most of the June Club Assembly to Basil who will address us on the upcoming year. Items we are certain to hear about are method of dues collections, breakfast costs/charges and what should be funded from the administrative side of our budget. The subject of two charitable fundraisers and one club fundraiser may also be raised. The idea of placing the newsletter on our web site instead of emailing it has been discussed. You should let your Board Members know if this works for you. It would accomplish a couple of things. (1) Difficulty in opening an attachment would no longer be an issue. (2) Anyone with a browser can read and/or print the newsletter from the web site. (3) Club members would visit the web site more often. We would simply send out an email informing you when the newest newsletter had been posted. The idea of placing old newsletters; perhaps a year’s worth, was also discussed. This would allow looking up information in older newsletters. A suggestion was made that some kind of search feature could be included to search for key words in all the newsletters. Someone more qualified than I am would need to work on that feature. We should be inducting Tim Kelley and Richard Pike into Rotary in the coming weeks. Everyone should make them feel very welcome.
